Description:

length 27 cm, weight 55 to 70g average.

 

Very common in Australia, it is the typical member of the Psephotus family, ground frequenting, it has a vast range through south-eastern Australia avoiding only dense woodland.

The pallid subspecies , Psephotus haematonotus caeruleus, is more often found in real desert. .

The evident difference between male and female doesn't need a description. The immatures are duller than adults,  young males can be distinguished very early by red feathers on their rump and greener feathers on the head, beak is grey in males and yellowish in females.
