Length 21 cm, weight 50/60g.

The male has a two-toned dark blue frontal band which does not extend beyond the eye, smaller for the female, with yellow lores and yellow patch behind the eye. The bright dark blue band from the shoulder of the wing to primary flight feathers is typical of this species and explains the name, it is duller and greener in female. Migratory with two distinct populations this species can be found in a large variety of habitat
